Swarm Studies

Murmurations in Light

Swarm Studies explore the intelligence in motion of self-organising systems through increasingly dematerialised, sensory environments. Inspired by the acrobatic efficiency of flocking birds, the individual light sources are each imbued with a collective behaviour.

When a person approaches the installation, the swarm alters the direction and demenour of its flight in response to the sound of their presence. Through its movement and behaviour, the swarm appears almost animate, responsively integrating the surrounding natural phenomena, spatial dynamics and human activity.
