Shackleton

Exploring Our Future Relationship with the Moon

Imagining our future relationship with the moon for Selfridges, London.

Working with NASA topographic data, we created a 2m x 1.5m scale model of the Shackleton crater from the south pole, of the moon, with full scale data accurate to the metre. Embedded within the landscape of the moon, were buildings and vehicles hinting at a future existence where humans have laid new foundations off earth.

Accompanying the surface model, a number of detailed narratives were developed to tell the story of the moon in our extrapolated future, including how we might live on the moon, why we might choose to do so and ultimately what does an existence on the moon offer.

Shackleton had 500,000 visitors every week for the 8 weeks when it was installed in Selfridges’ window on Oxford Street, London.
