A Crashcourse in Cloudspotting

Connecting Audiences with Public Rest and Acts of Bravery We Don’t See

An invitation to pause. To rest. To listen.

A Crashcourse in Cloudspotting asks you to connect with the subversive act of lying down. It’s about public rest and acts of bravery we don’t see.

The piece is part verbatim theatre, part meditation on rest, gravity and connection. It is about connection and care, and is crafted with the tools of virtuosic care to reframe rest as a creative act.

A Crashcourse in Cloudspotting exists in two versions. A digital version, created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and an installation with performance.

For the digital versions, we created a virtual gathering space in which audience and resters can come together. Through a web app, audiences and resters would share when they’re starting to rest, and this would start to trigger new sound elements in the overall soundscape. It would also switch on your light, represented by a hexagon in the app to show you’re resting and to give a sense of connectedness and togetherness.

For the installation, the audience are within the installation and have no influence over the soundscape. This soundscape only changes if one of the resters started to rest, no matter where in the world they were. Their rest is also shown through the illuminating of a light in the space. This represented their presence and connects audience to people who are resting at the very moment.

Audiences are invited to lie down in both versions of the work. We’ve learnt that our sense of self is different when we lie down and rest: we take in information and stories differently.
